Most people discover Annecy in summer, when the lake sparkles and the crowds fill the old town. But winter might just be my favourite season here. The lake wrapped in morning mist, the old town lit up and quiet, snow-capped mountains on the horizon, and the smell of melting raclette drifting from every restaurant. Annecy in winter has a charm the summer never shows. Here is how to make the most of it.
Wandering the illuminated old town
In winter, Annecy’s old town is at its most magical. The cobbled lanes, the canals and the pastel houses, often strung with lights and decorations, look like something from a postcard. It is the perfect time to wander without the summer crowds: stroll down Rue Sainte-Claire, seek out the traboules (the hidden medieval passageways), and duck into a café to warm up.
Climb up to the Château d’Annecy too. Its collection is nothing extraordinary, I will be honest, but the view over the rooftops and the lake from its courtyard, in the crisp winter light, is well worth the walk up.
The Christmas market, the highlight of the season
If you visit in December, Annecy’s Christmas market is a must. One of the most beautiful in the Alps, with around 200 chalets stretching from the lakeside to the Jardins de l’Europe, it turns the town into a proper Christmas village: local crafts, mulled wine, Savoyard treats and an ice rink by the water. The lake in winter: calm and beautiful
The lake does not disappear in winter, it simply changes character. The walk along the shore, from Quai Napoléon to the Jardins de l’Europe, is stunning in the crisp air, with the snow-capped mountains as a backdrop. The Pont des Amours still offers one of the loveliest views in town, and without the crowds, you actually get to enjoy it.
For the hardier visitor, cycling around the lake is still possible on a clear day, and a morning hike up Mont Veyrier, well wrapped up, rewards you with a panoramic view over the lake and the snowy peaks.
The mountains on your doorstep
This is one of Annecy’s great winter advantages: the ski resorts are less than an hour away. La Clusaz, Le Grand-Bornand and Semnoz (the closest, ideal for a family day or some sledging) mean you can easily combine a stay in town with a day on the slopes. You can stay somewhere warm in the old town and head up to ski in the morning: the best of both worlds.
Eating well: raclette and fondue season
Winter is THE season for Savoyard food, and Annecy does it beautifully. Nothing beats a fondue or raclette after a day out in the cold. Le Fréti is an institution for its generous fondues. Bon Pain Bon Vin, a cosy bistro, is perfect for artisan cheeses and good wine. And on Place Sainte-Claire, Chez Monique always finds you a table in a warm, lively atmosphere.
For something gentler, a hot chocolate at Haven, an elegant café under the arches of the old town, or a pastry from Boulangerie Les Délices du Lac (as beautiful as they are delicious), is the perfect way to warm up a winter’s day.
Discovering the town through a treasure hunt
Winter, with its calmer pace, is a perfect season to explore Annecy differently. Where to stay for a winter break
To make the most of Annecy in winter, the best place to stay is right in the heart of the old town: you can nip back to warm up between walks, enjoy the illuminations in the evening, and everything is within walking distance. The train station is less than fifteen minutes away on foot, which makes arriving by train very easy, and the ski resorts are a short drive away.
