It is one of the questions I am asked most often: how long do you need in Annecy? The honest answer is that it depends on what you are after. You can see the essentials in a day, but it would be a shame not to stay a little longer to enjoy the lake and the surrounding villages. Here is how to plan your visit depending on the time you have, and why Annecy rewards every extra day.
One day in Annecy: the essentials
If you only have one day, focus on the old town and the lake, the beating heart of Annecy.
Start by wandering the old town: the cobbled lanes, the canals, the Palais de l’Île (the old prison set in the middle of the Thiou river) and the lively Rue Sainte-Claire. Climb up to the Château d’Annecy for the view over the rooftops and the lake. After lunch on a terrace, take a stroll along the lakeside, from Quai Napoléon to the Jardins de l’Europe, crossing the famous Pont des Amours. Finish with a Savoyard dinner in the old town.
It is a lovely day, but mostly it leaves you wanting more.
Two days: the lake and time to breathe
With two days, you can really savour Annecy without rushing.
Spend the first day on the town, as above. On the second, it is all about the lake. Rent a bike and ride part of the greenway along the water (the full loop is 42 km, and an e-bike makes it easy), or hop on a boat cruise. In summer, cool off with a swim at Albigny beach or the Marquisats. And for a treat, do not miss the ice cream in the centre or a long lunch by the water.
Two days is, in my view, the minimum to truly feel Annecy’s charm.
Three days or more: discover the surroundings
This is where Annecy really comes into its own. With three days, you keep the first two for the town and the lake, and devote the third to the surroundings, which are stunning.
Drive or cycle around the lake and stop in the beautiful villages: Talloires with its postcard bay, Menthon-Saint-Bernard with its fairytale castle, and Duingt, the most photogenic of all. Nature lovers can head to the hidden Angon waterfall or the spectacular Gorges du Fier, an easy trail suspended above a rocky gorge. And if you love the mountains, the peaks and trails are right on the doorstep.
Three days lets you combine town, lake and nature at a relaxed pace.

And depending on the season?
The ideal length also depends on when you come. In summer, allow at least two or three days to enjoy the lake (swimming, cycling, cruises). In winter, two days often suffice for the town and the Christmas market, unless you want to add a day of skiing in the resorts nearby. In spring and autumn, two to three days let you enjoy a quieter town and magnificent scenery.
Is Annecy worth it?
Absolutely. Known as the “Venice of the Alps,” Annecy is one of the loveliest towns in France, with its turquoise lake, pastel old town and mountain backdrop. But what many visitors do not expect is everything around it: charming lakeside villages, excellent food, and a whole region of mountains and nature within easy reach. Annecy is not just a pretty photo for a day. It is a perfect base for exploring one of the most beautiful corners of the French Alps.
Discover the town in a different way
Whatever time you have, an original way to get to know Annecy is to turn it into a game. My self-guided treasure hunt takes you through the old town, clue by clue, solving a mystery: a Venetian masked ball in 1734 and a guest who vanished. Around 90 minutes, at your own pace, with no app to download, a great way to spend half a day while discovering the town.
Where to stay to make the most of Annecy
My advice, whatever the length of your visit: stay right in the heart of the old town. You are a few minutes from the lake, the train station and the restaurants, and you can easily pop back between outings. And the longer you stay, the more you can explore without rushing.
I have an apartment in Annecy’s old town, ideal as a base for a weekend or longer. By booking direct, you get the best rate, with no booking fees.
